The Beginning of His Troubles.

woods-1868.jpg

And by “his” I mean Lucas. My buddy, Tim and his wife Jessica just recently had this little bundle of joy and well before Lucas’ arrival, Tim asked if I’d be his second shooter on a final excursion with his wife.

I wasn’t sure I’d gotten anything but when I looked back at this shot and the couple of others near it from the shoot, I realized poor Lucas is gonna have his picture taken all the time. For the rest of his life. His dad is a photographer and is never gonna let him go.

“My God, it’ll be beautiful.”

Airwolf.

So it’s not really Airwolf and I haven’t scored interviews with Ernest Borgnine or Jan-Michael Vincent. It was, however, as close to Airwolf as I could come.

I Know What Girls Like.

Lately, my daughter’s been pointing out trucks. She notices them all and it seemed like a good idea to get her one. I mean, she’s two and she already has a distinct fashion sense (several purses to choose from, shoes for different outfits, dresses galore…) so adding a little bit of mechanical interest just rounds her out.

I think we’ll have to get her a loader (she calls them tractors) to go with the dump truck, but for the moment, she’s a-okay. And why shouldn’t she be? Do boys deserve all the fun?

A Parting Shot.

beach-3.jpg

I was trying for the second time this year to convince her that the water was fun. The very next day, she figured it out and I couldn’t drag her away. She kept pulling me closer and closer to the breakers. I remind you that I’m over 6 feet tall and she’s barely 3 feet tall. *sigh*

What A Big World It Is!

IMGP6416.jpg

So I got this new lens and I’ve been dying to get a shot with it. I was stymied over the weekend after it got here ’cause I had nothing lined up. I shot a number of images through my office window, but none of them were all that interesting. In the end, I had only to look into the eyes of the youngest member of my family to find a subject.

The problem with the brilliance of my plan is that she doesn’t stand still. Like ever. Especially when she’s awake. Go figure.

This is a grab from a quick trip to the playground. She wandered around and fell in the woodchips a couple of times. She managed to climb on nearly everything there, but she was not a fan of looking in the camera. At any rate, this is kinda the way I see her now that she’s both ambulatory and headstrong: from behind.

No.

Haven’t had a lot of new stuff to put up, so it’s more of the old for you.

Enjoy.

Photos of Me.

There are hardly any images of me that I like. I was digging around in my office (at home) today and came across school pictures where I have a “crustache” and what my friends less than affectionately referred to as “chin pubes.” Suffice it to say, I hate looking at my own photograph.

Today though, my mother-in-law gave me this awesome image of me and the small. It might be my new fave. You can judge for yourself.

Excuse the fact that it’s a quick ‘n dirty scan. I was so taken with it that I wanted to make sure it got back to its frame and thence to my office. I’ll try to grab the neg from her so I can get a better scan.

The Beach.

I read somewhere that photo editors like to see pictures from the real lives of the photographers that they hire. Whether that’s true or not is moot. I liked this picture. The thing that galls me is that there are no clouds.

I never realized how important clouds were until I found myself pining for them every time I shot pictures outside. *sigh*

Anyway, here’s m’girls. Ain’t they precious?

Speaking from the Past.

My maternal grandfather died shortly before I graduated from college, in 1994. As an interesting side note, I was such a crummy student that he was one of the few people who knew I’d eventually get out. I think it’d tickle him pink (one of his favorite ways of describing things) that I grew up to be a college professor.

My grandfather was a bunch of things in the 79 years he was alive. He’d served in the Army during World War II, he’d been the principal of an elementary school, he’d been on the highly acclaimed Virginia Union basketball team called “The Dream Team,” and he’d been a Mason. The thing that I remember best about him though — not that I remember a lot of the stuff that I mention here — is that he always had his camera around. I’m certain that the first 15 years of my life are well documented through the lightproof boxes he had.

This is what makes this post interesting. Since his death, no one from our family has really been through his photographs. In fact, since my grandmother died a couple of years ago, not many of us have been in the house. On a recent foray, my father found twenty some odd medium format negatives which he gave to me and tasked me with scanning. We looked at them in the kitchen of my folks’ house and speculated on who the people in the images are. I’ve scanned them and I can honestly say I don’t know who any of these people are. I don’t recognize them.

That doesn’t mean that they don’t seem to have really interesting stories, however. I’m planning on printing the lot of the images and giving them back to my mom so that perhaps she can figure out who the people are. Everyone else in her family who might be able to help has died so I’m counting on her.

Anyway, here are a couple.

UPDATE: My mom and dad have had a look and it turns out that the smiling face second from the left is my grandmother! The only pictures of her I’ve seen are when she must’ve been in her 30s. My parents speculate that she was in high school during these. I can hardly wait to get the prints to my mom.
