I haven’t got those. Usually when I try to maintain plants they die.
Not so this year. This small box represents the beginnings of what I hope will be a good summer for mixed greens, tomatoes, carrots, and green beans. Wish me luck.

Scouting.
I’d been told about this amazing location to shoot by a friend and when I went to see it, I took photog buddy Richard Upshur along. The space lived up to expectations but the scheduling nightmare that would ensue to be able to use it sent me thinking in different directions.
To that end, Richard and I swung down to James River Park, an old haunt of mine, to see about alternatives. I’d really only brought my camera along to look through it now and again and hadn’t really planned on shooting, but I saw this grouping of rocks and played around with some long exposures. This was the clearest of the group.
I may head back with a tripod and a neutral density filter sometime soon, just to see.

Oh! Hello, Doughnuts…
Can you ever really be sure when something miraculous is gonna happen?
I mean, a plate of soft, fresh, glazed doughnuts could show up while you were sitting in the park, minding your own business. Couldn’t it?
As long as the confection-fairy is around, you’ll never know.
Look to the Skies.
I’m working on some new stuff that’s got atmosphere. Like this.
Thanks a lot to Jennifer who was all about having her picture made.
I got some help from Nia, who works just as well on both sides of the camera, evinced here and here. We set up the lights for this and had Jennifer stand in the cool rain for about 25 minutes before we wrapped.
This image is new and different for me ’cause the retouching will be done by my twitter bud, Tanya Nichols. She was interested in honing her skills and asked me if I had any images I could let her work on. I told her I’d have new images from time to time and that she was welcome to help out with them when they came up.
I’ll post an update when she sends me something back.
This is a continuation a series I started awhile back. There’s a companion to this image over on this blog. If you live in the Richmond area, there’s a wealth of information about the Woodland Heights and Westover Hills areas to be found there.
A huge roar of thanks goes out to these boys’ mom. We’ve been trying to schedule this shoot for a long time and always something happened to stymie us. As near as I could tell, the lads got a big kick out of having stuff written on their hands. Add to that their amazing poker faces (they were smiling to beat the band when I was writing and when we were chimping the shots later).
I’m happy with where these are going, but I have to confess, I’m getting a little stumped on what to write on their hands that delivers a message about being a kid and only takes 8 characters. I’m open to suggestions.
Pare, Pair, Pear.
I had to cut these images up a little before deciding which two of the series I’d shot to use for this diptych and well… They’re pears.
I’m playing with available light, which I’d always kind of thought was the province of film photography. I’m glad to see differently.

I Know What Girls Like.
Lately, my daughter’s been pointing out trucks. She notices them all and it seemed like a good idea to get her one. I mean, she’s two and she already has a distinct fashion sense (several purses to choose from, shoes for different outfits, dresses galore…) so adding a little bit of mechanical interest just rounds her out.
I think we’ll have to get her a loader (she calls them tractors) to go with the dump truck, but for the moment, she’s a-okay. And why shouldn’t she be? Do boys deserve all the fun?
