Ascension.

More with the film camera. I need to get out more and do that.
It occurred to me when one of my images made it here.

Small vs. Big.

I really like (although I am not very good at) playing soccer. I coached in one place or another for about 10 years of my teaching career, growing to appreciate the sport and still not getting a lot better at it.

One of my favorite times as a player (did I mention that I wasn’t very good?) was when I played at an indoor sporting facility called RISE. Playing indoor means wearing slightly different shoes than playing outside. It also means that one can immediately enjoy a beer after a match with one’s teammates ’cause there’s a bar on the premises, but it’s the shoes that are important.

I wear these most of the time ’cause they’re comfortable and if they’re not too terribly beat up, they match a lot of my clothing, looking simultaneously neat and casual. They’re Adidas Sambas and when I found a pair that fit my daughter when she was still a baby, I snapped them up. Now that my son is that size, he wears them. ‘Cause after all, it’s not like either of them did (or is gonna do) a lot of walking in them,

I’d been thinking about doing a shot like this for a while and finally got around to it. I’m not sure I’m finished with it ’cause the placement of the shoes might need some work. Nonetheless, it makes me smile to see them.

Say Cheese.

I was looking back through old stuff on flickr and “found” this in my photostream.

Cheese

I uploaded it just over two years ago, but I distinctly recall shooting it when my wife was pregnant with my daughter. I made the mistake of going to NYC with a big heavy film camera instead of either a smaller film camera or a digital camera and still I managed to score this one. I wonder if it wouldn’t have looked better shot through a Holga…

A Lack of Color.

IMG_2668

I was moving my Lightroom catalog over from one machine to another and saw this image, shot digitally in color, and did a quick color conversion and crop. It works and makes me think it might be fun to sift back through the whole catalog to see what images re-present themselves to me.

A Girl in the Forest.

forest hymn.jpg

I borrowed this cello a long time back and wanted to shoot something like this with it. I was inspired by this series on flickr by Alicia J. Rose. Of course, since the instrument was borrowed, I couldn’t get it all wet…

The model was a friend of a friend who had some time on her hands. I posted one of the digital images from the shoot a long time back, but wasn’t thrilled by them. Now that I’m looking at the film, I’m much happier.

I just need to figure out what a “standard” 6×6 scan looks like for me, ’cause these are all over the place.

Fly-Girl Friday.

Katerina

From a model shoot for a young lady who’s leaving the city soon. She wanted some fashion stuff to update her portfolio.
The amazing post process work is due to Joe over at Brainchild Collective. I told him that the image I’d shot wasn’t that good all by itself and he smiled and said, “Hence, the Collective part.”

Have a good weekend!

Ford.

Old.

I try to take Henry out for an hour walk every day through Woodland Heights. There are a multitude of houses that would make great backdrops. There are no fewer than six old cars and trucks that are begging to be photographed. This old Ford is one of them. I think that it’s an old F-150, but my Auto Anthropology skills aren’t all that good.

Reflection.

I’m working on retooling the online portfolio right now and I’m putting together some new stuff to shoot.
I’ll be back. I promise.

Winter Scenes.

Temperatures over the past weekend and into this week have been in the upper 70s. Without photographic evidence, one would never know that Richmond had been brought to a veritable standstill.

I have some of that evidence:

Digital Tomfoolery.

This is not a real photograph.
I mean, it’s real in the sense I used a camera to make it – a film camera, at that – and it’s a real scene, but it is not a Polaroid photograph. It’s a fake. I used an application that you can download online for free (whether you have a Mac or a PC). It’s called The Poladroid Project and it turns jpegs into polaroid-looking photographs. There’s even a flickr group where folks put their experiments up.

While I usually avoid this kind of post-process, I like this one. I think that digital treatments have their place in photography and if used sparingly, they can create some really cool stuff.

For what it’s worth, the unadulterated scan of this negative lives here.
