Back in the Old Days.

Wish You Were Here-9146.jpg

My folks have a house out on the Mobjack Bay and we took the kids out to visit over the Memorial Day weekend. The house is great for forgetting there’s a world where you have to work and there’s no end to the opportunities to shoot pictures like these.

With a little post-process trickery, I tried to make these look a little old ’cause I thought it’d give them some character.

Baggage, Or The Ultimate Found Photo.

Anyone who has a thing for cameras and gets them used will tell you that from time to time, there’s film that someone else exposed (or shot, depending on what the pictures look like, I guess) left in the cameras. Such is what happened to me when I got my first Hasselblad.

It had a roll of some kind of Kodak film in it. I dropped it at the local camera store (and this has got to be almost 10 years ago) so I could see what treasures awaited me.

When I got the film back, it was woefully dark. I tried to print a contact sheet to get a feel for what was there and couldn’t see anything. I quickly gave up but never got rid of the negs. Imagine my surprise when I scanned a couple the other day to find that there were really images there.

Someone had a holiday at the shore apparently. The rest of the story is up to your imagination. If this kind of thing intrigues you, do a quick google search for “found photos” and have a good time. This magazine may also interest you, though it’s not just photographs.

Footprints.

There’s an old Tribe Called Quest song called “Footprints” that I honestly was thinking of when I shot this. It’s sort of fitting for the end of the beach photos. A woman and her Scottish Terrier had just come by and stopped to talk to Zoe. She was having none of the little dog, was happier to see him from a distance.

As the Scottie and his lady wandered on down the beach, I snapped a couple with the Holga. I like the effect here but wish I’d been a little higher so that the prints would stand out some more.

A Parting Shot.

beach-3.jpg

I was trying for the second time this year to convince her that the water was fun. The very next day, she figured it out and I couldn’t drag her away. She kept pulling me closer and closer to the breakers. I remind you that I’m over 6 feet tall and she’s barely 3 feet tall. *sigh*

Film Snobs.

I originally shot some of these with film on a day that I was killing time. I figured it’d be fun to see what the Hasselblad could do with a little Fuji slide film. I liked what I got but couldn’t be completely sure of the scans so I figured another go in digital was worth the effort and since I was at the beach I’d try it with a backdrop. My jury’s out.

But a buddy of mine sent me a link to this post about film snobs. It warmed my heart ’cause over the course of the 4 days we were out of town, I shot 2 real rolls of film and digital stuff that was mostly of my daughter.

A Nor’Easter.

scapes-3.jpg

We just got back from a short family trip to the beach and this was one of the shots I got at the beach before the sun was brave enough to venture out. My Photoshop skills don’t do justice to what I could see, but it was beautiful and terrifying at the same time. There’s still spray on the lens from being out in this. I’m waiting to get the film I shot back.
